Compassionate, understanding and caring, Dr. Debbie Luk’s passion is to help her patients perform at their full visual potential, whether it is in a school, work or sports setting.
Dr. Debbie Luk is one of the few residency-trained and board-certified Developmental Optometrists in Canada. Sports Vision and Vision Therapy are an integral part of her practice. She is a trusted clinician with the Calgary Flames as their team optometrist. She also utilizes her knowledge to enhance professional athletes’ visual abilities, which can be demonstrated through her longstanding relationship with Team Canada sports.
Patients with other visual conditions such as amblyopia and strabismus are also treated at her clinic and can benefit from advanced technology such as 3D dichoptic training. Her hands-on and personalized therapy approach makes her clinic suitable for all patients, including those with learning disabilities and patients suffering from traumatic brain injuries.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Luk is active within her profession. She is a board member for the Canadian College of Specialties in Optometry, Canadian Chapter of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development, and Alberta Associations of Optometrists’ Vision Development Committee and Editorial Board. As a leader in the field, Dr. Luk headed Canada’s first Residency Program for Sports Vision and Vision Therapy and served as Clinical Adjunct Professor at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry. She continues to lecture at various conferences.
During her spare time, Dr. Luk loves to explore Alberta Parks, cook and play sports with her husband and four children.
Education
Dr. Luk graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Western Ontario and a Doctor of Optometry degree with Honours at the University of Waterloo where she served as Class President for four years. Upon graduation, she was presented with the prestigious American Optometric Foundation Carl Zeiss Vision Fellowship and the College of Optometrists in Vision Development Award for Clinical Excellence in Vision Therapy.
Dr. Luk’s post-doctorate studies include a Vision Therapy residency in New York City. She has also earned a certificate of Advanced Clinical Competency in Vision Therapy and Rehabilitation. In order to have the highest levels of knowledge and skills for treating her patients, she completed a certification process and was inducted as a Board Certified Fellow (FCOVD) of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development.
